What is DezignWorks' Reverse Engineering Process?

DezignWorks has a team of highly skilled engineers who specialize in creating CAD from physical parts or reverse engineering. We start by scanning your part to capture all of the 3D geometry. Next, we clean this scan data up and use it to create a polygonal mesh or STL. The polygonal mesh is then used to create a 3D CAD model of the part by extracting parametric features and modifying them, if needed. We use DezignWorks for SOLIDWORKS to produce the most accurate and precise 3D CAD models of your high-performance parts.

DezignWorks | Pricing for 3D Scanning Services

Accurate data capture is the critical first step to the reverse engineering process. Generally, this is best accomplished with 3D scanning or probing the part to capture the geometry. We use our own reverse engineering software package, Dezignworks® to accurately recreate models from the data we collect to ensure accuracy and manufacturability of the part or assembly.

There are 5 different 3D model options available. Each model type requires progressively more investment, and the return on that investment is captured in other down steam manufacturing methods, such as 3D printing, CNC milling, Virtual Reality, or Simulation / FAE testing. DezignWorks can provide you with the exact type of 3D CAD model needed for your project.
  • Polygonal Mesh-$

    This model type is the most economical option, and is your typical starting point for the reverse engineering or CAD modeling process. All scanning hardware has the ability to create polygonal meshes file types by direct scanning. They usually export an STL, OBJ, PLY, etc. A water tight polygonal mesh is required for 3D printing applications. This is the fastest way to go from scan to print.

  • Hybrid Model-$$

    Since polygonal models don’t work well within parametric CAD systems, there is an option to create auto-surface geometry combined with parametric features. This gives us the option to edit or change prismatic geometries, but the more organic features cannot be edited. Dezignworks® has proprietary algorithms for auto-surfacing creation without giving you a model with hundreds of facets on your model that is detrimental when using the model for other manufacturing processes.

  • Auto-Surface Model-$$

    This model type is used typically for organic shapes, where a NURB surface can accurately define the shape. Using the Dezignworks® Auto-Surface tool will minimize the number of surfaces that are needed to create the model. This means less mouse clicks for the Designer/Engineering and means time saving for you and your team. This method is not recommended on parts with a lot of Geometric features due to the sharp edges that are inherent with that type of geometry.

  • Feature-Based Model-$$$

    Feature based modeling is our most requested model type. The model is created using the native CAD operations, while using the polygonal mesh as a reference to best fit the CAD features, and sketches. The features aren’t defined at the sketch level; however this model can usually be edited with Direct modeling techniques, commonly known as sub-d modeling packages.

  • Parametric CAD Model - $$$$

    Parametric models are created just like the Feature-Based Model type. The parametric model is created direct from the scan data natively in your companies CAD software. The model is created using traditional CAD tools, such as Cuts, Extrudes, Surfacing and Primitive Features. These features are automatically define at the sketch level, with dimensions and design constraints that can be modified or changed, as well as notated for GD&T on a 2D print.
